No More Recruiting 8th Graders?

How young is too young? The National Association of Basketball Coaches on Thursday said it strongly opposes accepting commitments from students who have not finished their sophomore year of high school.

Some college basketball coaches apparently will accept commitments from anybody with potential, no matter how young they are. Tim Floyd of USC has proved that in recent years.

While the NABC say they strongly oppose accepting commitments from any student that has not completed their sophomore year of H.S., it is not a rule with any penalties. So do not expect it to deter programs that are willing to bend rules and ignore common sense looking to get an edge.

I don't believe it is smart to accept a commitment from a kid that has not even finished Jr. High. That shows they care about one thing only, and education is not it. This is the type of player that will spend one year with the program and then leave.

USC seems to be fine with the one and done motto. Unfortunately, if you are going to build a successful college basketball at a school not known for basketball or its academics one and done seems to be better than none.
